Elon Mode: Tested by a Tesla Hacker

Last Updated July 4, 2023 By Subhash D Leave a Comment

A software hacker also known online as @greentheonly has unveiled the ins and outs of a new feature in the Tesla vehicles, which he refers to as “Elon Mode.” The Elon Mode helps in easy and hands-free driving of the Tesla vehicles. The hacker delved deep into the coding of the vehicle for several years and discovered many features.

To assess the worthiness of the feature, the online hacker tests the feature. He also posted some footage. However, he maintained secrecy regarding what the mode or the settings appear like on the screen. During the test drive, the hacker noticed that the car could operate independently while the Self-Driving software of Tesla was activated.

While using the Autopilot system of Tesla, you must gently push the steering wheel to ensure that you are paying attention to driving even though you are using Elon Mode. It is also interesting that the system can slow down on a highway and change lanes. However, whether this feature will be accessible to regular owners is unknown. This software is believed to be much safer than ever before.

There have been several complaints from the user’s end regarding this feature. Users have reported instances of sudden acceleration and braking. They have also complained that system checks occur very frequently, which nags the users. Users have also expressed their concern over how the nudging requires enough force, which can cause the system to shut off.

Alongside the hands-on-steering feature, there is a camera just right above the middle rearview mirror that keeps track of whether the driver is looking forward. However, the feature is also bothersome as it is finicky and keeps nagging drivers to “pay attention to the road.” The camera cannot really tell if the driver’s eyes are on the road. Disabling the feature more than 5 times also prevents drivers from using Elon Mode.

An additional amount of $15,000 is required to avail of the Full Self-Driving mode of Tesla. Whether this feature will be made available to all users remains a question.
