Sources have stated that Alphabet Inc. is looking for suppliers and is considering moving the production of Google Pixel phones to India. The decision was arrived at due to the disruptions in China over the lockdowns during COVID-19 and the rising tensions between Beijing and the US.
To diversify production beyond China, Google has already started its conversations with leading companies such as Lava International Ltd, Bharat FIH, and Dixon Technologies India Ltd.
The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, has been looking forward to and making attempts to pitch India as a manufacturing hub. India’s Technology Minister, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, also met Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google. Their discussion was centered around Modi’s intent for the local manufacturing drive and how the nation is prepared on technological grounds to allow the commencement of the manufacturing drive.
Apple has also widened its supplier base in India, which has resulted in the tripling of the iPhone output. Google would be another worldwide technology player to shift its production to India. Executives of Google, like Ana Corrales, and Maggie Wei, have also paid a visit to India. If the assembly can be done locally, it can help to boost the sales of the Pixel phones.
If the Pixel sales witnesses success, then Google could also plan and shift hardware production like speakers to India. However, there still hasn’t been any certainty about the finalization of the deal.
