The 6 Pillars of M2M (Machine to Machine) in IoT

Last Updated January 17, 2023 By Saket Leave a Comment

M2M or ‘Machine to Machine’ is the communication between multiple machines without the help of human effort. M2M plays an important role in the development of the Internet of Things. M2M consists of advanced technology that is able to reduce costs, get reliable data, easy monitoring and control. It provides more functionality and better maintainability for its users. M2M was initially developed for the manufacturing industry. The basic working of M2M can be summarised as the process of connecting a physical device to communication hardware to get the best business results by achieving automation. The 6 pillars serve as the basic factors that one must study before implementing M2M.

1 Remote monitoring

Remote Monitoring is an integral part of Machine to Machine communication. It enables us to access various connected devices even from a remote location. Remote monitoring uses connected devices, servers, and management software to create a system to control large-scale automation. Most remote monitoring systems often include diagnostics and debugging capabilities for resolving issues.

2 RFID

RFID or ‘Radio Frequency Identification’ deals with the identification and tracking of objects in the electromagnetic field. It is a better alternative to barcodes and delivers high-quality results in receiving identification information. It is also useful in data collection and storage. RFID uses radio waves to collect data and directly enter that data into the database. An important part of the RFID technology is the RFID tags that contain an IC and a circuit. The tag is made up of protective material to save the IC and Circuit from any external damage. RFID technology can be altered according to its application.

3 Sensor Network

A Sensor network contains some connected devices and a wireless connection. The wireless connection is used to monitor the readings of the connected sensors. The connected devices are generally spread over a wide area for which the device is able to report several parameters like temperature, soil conditions, etc. Typically a sensor network contains nodes, a base computer, the internet, and mobile devices, all interconnected to each other.

4 Smart Device

The smart device is a device that reduces human effort and makes intelligent decisions on par with human thinking to complete a particular task. Smart devices are basically IoT-enabled devices that use a computer network to obtain data from any form of sensors like humidity, temperature, speed, etc. A smart device comes with the functionality of connecting, sharing, and interacting with the user.

5 Telematics

It is a branch that deals with the long-distance transmission of information. It is a very important metric that is required in fields like electronics and electrical engineering, road safety, telecommunications, the automotive industry, etc. Along with transmission, it is also used for the informatics of any wide-range communication system.

6 Telemetry

This technology deals mostly with production, industry, and medical applications. Telemetry also engages in the handling of a remote industrial system. It is a wireless technology that is used to transfer the data achieved from the connected devices in a remote system. The use of telemetry is predominantly in the continuous recording of data over a large period of time. It is one of the most researched topics under the M2M.

Final Words

The 6 pillars of M2M help the researchers and developers to list down the domains for a particular M2M application. They also serve as the basis for understanding the M2M. M2M serves as a very important field in IoT. It also saves as an ideal technology for getting the best possible consumer actions in a company.
