We all know that cleaning of laptops is necessary and if not cleaned for days it can bring a bad feeling not only to you, but can also put a very bad impression on clients as well. Now the question is how frequently you should clean the laptop? Well, there is no fixed number to this query, but yes, it depends upon the usage of the laptop. For an example, if you work in an industrial environment or at a construction site, you need to clean the laptop more often and if you are working in an enclosed AC environment, you need the cleaning sparingly. In case you travel a lot or multiple users work on the laptop, the frequency of cleaning the laptop will vary. Here we will guide you with the right tools and procedure to clean the laptop from both inside and outside of it.
Pre-Cleaning Instructions
Before you actually start cleaning a laptop, it is utmost important to know certain precautions and prepare yourself with the necessary tools and material.
- First of all, turn off the laptop and disconnect the charger from the power socket completely.
- Do not use direct liquid sprays on the laptop.
- Do not use water from direct supply, thinners or other chemical solutions.
- Avoid using a vacuum cleaner to clean the vents of a laptop instead use a compressed air. You can easily buy a compressed air can
- Use Isopropyl alcohol since it evaporates quickly.
- Arrange cotton swabs and a soft linen cloth for cleaning.
How to clean a laptop keyboard
The keyboard is the most affected area of the laptop as far as dust is concerned. Apart from becoming dirty, the keyboard also acquires harmful bacteria which need to be wiped off on a regular basis. Many websites like Lifewire have recommended moving the laptop upside down and then tap the back side of the laptop to clear the debris from the area between keys which we do not recommend anyways.
It is better to use a compressed air-can to remove the rubble stuck between the keys. Now moisten the soft cloth with isopropyl alcohol or acetone and apply is on the keys to clean them. You can also wipe the keypad and mouse area with the same damp cloth.
Preventive TIP: In case, something gets spilled on the laptop keyboard, immediately move the laptop upside down to drain the liquid and then turn off the laptop. Do not turn it on until the keyboard gets dry.
Tips to clean the laptop case
Firstly, close the lid of the laptop. Now take a damp cloth (soft cotton) and move it over the laptop to clean it. Finally, take a dry cloth to remove any stains left on the body. Since most of the laptop cases are made of plastic, do not use any harsh chemical solvents to it. You can use Isopropyl alcohol or a home –liquid detergent diluted with water to clean it.
How to clean laptop vents and ports
Do not use a cloth to clean the cooling outlets or connection ports of the laptop. It is advisable to use compressed air to clean them. Make sure you use the can at an angle in order to make sure the dust is blown away from the vents.
Clean the laptop screen
Laptop screen is the most delicate part of the laptop and any cleaning attempt in a wrong way can permanently damage the screen. Turn off the laptop and use an ultra-soft cloth (lint-free) to clear any dry dust off the laptop screen. In case there are visual marks left behind on the screen, apply isopropyl alcohol on the cloth and wipe out the screen slowly in a circular motion. Cleaning the laptop from inside
As already said, you can clean the heat dissipation fan with the help of a low power blower or a compressed air can.
If your laptop has a DVD writer or a CDROM, you can clean the inside lens with the help of a DVD lens cleaner kit.
If you think the internal fan is making noise in spite of cleaning it with compressed air, you need to open it and get the fan and the heat sink assembly cleaned from a qualified technician.
Finally
Apart from dirt and filth issues, some users do face the problem of a foul odor coming from the laptop. To get rid of stinking smell you can use deodorizers. Put the laptop and deodorizer in a bin for a few hours and you will definitely see the results.
