We are back at it again, back at home and working away as we have never left. For some, working from home is the absolute dream, and they can find no fault with the reinstated imposed way of working, but for others, the distractions can be too great to ignore.
You are never that far away from your bed, and if you have pets, well – that is an entirely different distraction altogether.
That being said, remote working can be successful! There just needs to be a little bit of preparation.
Read this piece to find out what you could be doing to help make your remote working go a little easier.
Get Dressed
Many of us have been made acutely aware of how easy it is to roll out of bed and straight downstairs without so much as a brush through the hair. Sitting in our pj’s all day can definitely be a one-off treat, but if it begins to become the norm, it can leave you feeling sluggish and unproductive. This is because what we wear affects our mood and our mental processes. That being said, it is imperative that you are comfortable with whatever you wear, as anything else will just serve as a miserable distraction. Having a set of clothes that you specifically wear for work could also help keep your mind separate from work life and home life.
Have a Designated Space
Having a designated space can not only help your mind shift into work mode, but perhaps more importantly, it can allow you to slip back into a home mode when you are done. It can be difficult to separate work from home when you are in the same place day in day out, and everything can just bleed into one another. So, having a space you know is for work can not only help you feel prepared for the day ahead, but it also means you are able to have everything right where you need it.
If you find this is difficult to do, then you can always consider renting a hot desk or try working in a flexible office space. This will help give you somewhere as a clear working space that is completely separate from your home, and it can come with plenty of other benefits too!
Know When to Take Breaks
It can be easy to get carried away when you are at home, especially when the usual cues of everyone going off for lunch or chatter breaks in the kitchen are taken away from you. While for many this can be the height of productivity, it is also extremely important that you look after yourself and take breaks regularly. It is also important that you know when to switch off too when the workday is over. Do not carry your work over into your personal life, and make sure to be strict with yourself. You are not your job, and your personal time should be spent as such.
