How to Troubleshoot When Youtube is Not Working on Chrome

Last Updated February 16, 2021 By Subhash D Leave a Comment

Both Chrome and YouTube are parts of Google. There may be two different software, but often users use Chrome to access YouTube. However, they do not always work properly simultaneously. In different ways, users can try if YouTube is having a problem with Chrome.

The method follows both Google Chrome on Mac and Windows.

Reasons Why YouTube is not Running in Chrome

A couple of reasons occur when YouTube does not work correctly in Chrome. To fix this, users need to check the underlying problem. The main hindrances that can stop YouTube from working properly include:

  • Unnecessary Chrome extension. Some extensions like adblocker often interrupt playing YouTube videos
  • Corrupted local data
  • Turned off JavaScript
  • Lousy internet connection
  • Problem with home network connection
  • The problem in “Internet Service Provider”
  • Outdated web browser

Methods to Fix YouTube in Chrome

It is necessary to update Chrome to the latest version. Often the web browser is outdated and it prevents loading YouTube.

Simply updating it sometimes solves the problem. If it is not enough then try troubleshooting the following steps. These steps also help when videos from another website also experience playback problems in Chrome.

1. Restart Chrome

Sometimes YouTube does not work if multiple tabs or windows are open in Chrome. Close all the tabs and windows and restart it. If YouTube is still not working then force quit it. One can type CTRL+Shift+ESC to open task manager and click on the “end process” to make this happen.

2. Enable JavaScript

If JavaScript is not allowed in Chrome settings, one needs to turn it on to get video playback. Go to settings in Chrome. Type “JavaScript” in the setting’s search bar. Open it and toggle on the “Allow (recommended)”.

3. Disable Hardware Acceleration

This feature often interrupts video playback on any website. To disable this, go to settings, type “hardware acceleration” in the setting’s search box. Toggle off “Use hardware acceleration when available“.

4. Clear cookies and caches

It is another disturbance and often prevents Chrome from smooth loading. Getting rid of corrupted data is important and for that users have to follow it. Go to settings in Chrome. Click on “Safety Check” and tap on “Clear browsing data” to clear cookies, caches, and more.

5. Use incognito mode

Incognito mode in Chrome does not block tracking by external sites. However, it conflicts with extensions that prevent YouTube from loading. If YouTube is working appropriately in incognito mode then the problem is happening with extensions. Disable them one by one to understand which is one is a spoilsport.

6. Restart Network Hardware

Disruption of network hardware causes a hindrance in YouTube video playback. Unplug network components and reattach them. Reboot the modem or unplug it and plug them back in. These steps can solve the problem. Leave everything for about a minimum of twenty seconds to make components have power cycled completely.

7. Check Internet Connection Speed

Lousy internet connection disturbs video playback on all websites. So you need to test the connection online. Type “check internet connection speed” in Google and run the test. If it is significantly slow then contact the internet service provider to fix it. Minimum 500 Kbps to 1 Mbps is necessary to run low quality and medium quality video.

8. Reset Chrome

If the mentioned methods do not result in anything then reset Chrome. Open settings, type “reset” in the search box. Tap on “Restore settings to their original defaults“. However, users need to keep in mind that resetting the browser will clear everything including extensions, pinned tabs, bookmarks, home pages, theme, browsing history, download location, saved password.

9. Reinstall Chrome

It is the last option if everything has failed. Uninstall, clean residual files, and reinstall Chrome in OS to eradicate the problem.
