DuckDuckGo Announces The Beta-Test of Its Privacy-focused Browser for Mac

Last Updated January 15, 2025 By Subhash D Leave a Comment

DuckDuckGo is a well-known search engine that is known for its user privacy. It already offers web browsers for Android and iOS and browser extensions for Firefox, Chrome, and Safari. But there came an announcement by the company recently that it is launching desktop browsers, too.

The first desktop browser it is planning to launch is for Mac. Currently, the DuckDuckGo web browser is available as an invite-only beta version and is designed to be used as a web browser that users can use every day with complete protection of their privacy. This move by the company has added one more service to its growing suite of digital privacy tools for users all over the globe.

What are the Features Included

DuckDuckGo has said that along with other features, this web browser will manage the cookie consent pop-ups on many sites automatically. It will also be using encrypted HTTPS connections every time they are available. In addition to this, the browser will automatically block the trackers and allow you to clear the website data stored because of your surfing on a site-by-site basis. It would also not load the content on the sites that embed trackers in their content. Instead, it will display a notification warning the user about the tracking and giving an option if the user wishes to proceed.

The web browser also has a password manager that is capable of importing data from various browsers and browser extensions such as LastPass or 1Password. However, the feature to privately sync the bookmarks and passwords between different browsers has been planned but is unavailable in this version, initially.

It is important to know that DuckDuckGo doesn’t fork an existing browser like Firefox for the Mac. Its build is based on the rendering engine used by Safari known as WebKit. This helps DuckDuckGo in claiming the speed of its browser is faster than Chrome in comparison to some graphics-based performances. It also claims that the data used by it for web browsing is around 60% less than Chrome.

How to Sign Up for it

If you want to sign up for the beta version, you simply need to download the mobile application of DuckDuckGo or update the existing one to its latest version. After this, open the “Settings” in the app and go to “DuckDuckGo for Desktop” which is present in the “More from DuckDuckGo” section. Then tap on “Join the Private Waitlist.” After this as soon as an invite code is granted to you, you will receive a notification from the app that will take you to a link to the download page.
