At the GPU Technology Conference (GTC), NVIDIA made a historic announcement about the release of the much-awaited NVIDIA Blackwell platform, which represents a major advancement in processing power. With a quarter of the energy and cost consumption of its predecessor, this ground-breaking platform promises to enable enterprises globally to build and implement real-time generative AI (artificial intelligence) on trillion-parameter LLMs (large language models).
For faster computation, the Blackwell GPU architecture offers six revolutionary innovations. These developments have the potential to open doors in a number of fields, such as data processing, computer-aided drug design, electrical design automation, quantum computing, engineering simulation, and generative Artificial intelligence. “Generative AI is the defining technology of our time,” said Jensen Huang, the founder and CEO of NVIDIA, emphasizing the critical role that generative AI will play in creating the future. The driving force behind this new technological revolution is Blackwell.”
Industry heavyweights including Amazon Web Services, Google, Dell Technologies, Meta, OpenAI, Microsoft, Oracle, xAI, and Tesla are a few of the well-known companies anticipated to use Blackwell.
Revolutionary Technologies Driving Blackwell’s Potential
Six innovative technologies and the Blackwell platform allow for real-time LLM inference and AI training for models with up to 10 trillion parameters.
1. The Most Powerful Chip in the World. With 208 billion transistors and a specially designed 4NP TSMC process, the Blackwell-architecture GPUs provide unmatched performance at lower energy costs.
2. The 2nd-Gen Transformer Engine. Blackwell doubles computation and model sizes, providing four-bit floating point Artificial Intelligence(AI) inference capabilities, thanks to its sophisticated dynamic range management algorithms and support for micro-tensor scaling.
3. 5th-Generation NVLink. This version of NVLink provides unprecedented bidirectional throughput per GPU, enabling smooth, fast communication amongst many GPUs for large-scale LLMs.
4. RAS Engine. A dedicated engine is built into Blackwell-powered GPUs for dependability, availability, and serviceability, improving system resilience and uptime for large-scale AI deployments.
5. Secure AI. Designed to meet the needs of privacy-sensitive sectors like healthcare and finance, improved secure computing capabilities guarantee the safety of AI models and client data without sacrificing speed.
6. Decompression Engine. Its specialized decompression engine speeds up database searches, improving data science and analytics efficiency.
A Super-chip
Using the ultra-low-power NVLink chip-to-chip connectivity, the NVIDIA GB200 Grace Blackwell Superchip, a key part of the Blackwell platform, unites 2 NVIDIA B200 Tensor Core GPUs along with the NVIDIA Grace CPU. This super chip, which forms the basis of the newest DGX SuperPOD, offers unmatched AI performance and memory capacity.
Global Adoption and Partnerships
Products based on Blackwell are expected to be offered by a number of partners in the coming months. Prominent cloud service providers will deliver Blackwell-powered instances, including AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, in addition to several NVIDIA Cloud Partner program firms. In order to expedite their products, a network of hardware and software vendors, including Cisco, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Dell, Cadence, Ansys, and Synopsys, will also utilize Blackwell-powered processors.
NVIDIA’s Commitment to Innovation
NVIDIA AI Enterprise provides end-to-end OS support for production-grade AI and is compatible with the Blackwell platform. Businesses may use the NVIDIA NIMTM inference microservices, libraries, AI frameworks, and tools in a variety of computing settings thanks to this extensive ecosystem.
